They can only be defeated with the use of the Rainbow Star or Fire Flower. They are commonly tossed down by Lakitus but some appear on their own. Spinies appear yet again in Super Mario Galaxy 2 commonly found in galaxies such as the Yoshi Star Galaxy and the Starshine Beach Galaxy, and are first encountered in the former galaxy. The game also introduces some Lakitus which toss Coins instead of Spinies. Additionally, World 7's enemy course is with a Lakitu which tosses down heaps of Spinies. The World 2 Enemy Course takes place in an underground cavern with Spinies. Spinies can be destroyed when upside down with a ground pound. Once again, Shells and Fireballs can defeat them, and Ice Balls can freeze a Spiny into an Ice Block, and Mario or another character can destroy it via a Ground Pound or by tossing the Ice Block against a wall. The game also introduces Spinies that can walk on ceilings and drop down and slide into Mario as he gets close. They behave the same as they did previously commonly found in World 2, World 6, and World 7. Spinies are back in New Super Mario Bros. The use of fireballs, a Starman, Koopa Shells, or a Mega Mushroom can easily defeat a Spiny. They behave the same way they did in previous 2D platformers. Once again, they are frequently tossed down by Lakitus but this time, they also frequently appear on their own. In this game, they commonly appear in World 2 and World 6. Sad Spinies are much faster than Spinies. A crying variation of the Spiny called the Sad Spiny appears in this game too. They appear walking along the ground in various levels, they are no longer tossed down by Lakitus (Lakitus do toss Spiny Eggs but they don't turn into Spinys upon hitting the ground). Spinies return in Super Princess Peach behaving the same as they did in other 2D platformers, in this game however, they walk much slower. Spinies also appear in the minigame Lakitu Launch. Also, the Spinies have been slightly redesigned and given a more modern appearance. In Super Mario 64 DS, the Spiny's behavior is relatively unchanged but they now also appear in new levels Sunshine Isles and Goomboss Battle. They slowly walk around the area they were tossed down at and cannot be defeated. They can be found in Tiny-Huge Island and Rainbow Ride. Spinies return in Super Mario 64 as enemies tossed down by Lakitus. Defeating a Spiny is worth 200 points, the same as in Super Mario Bros. Lakitus can be defeated with the use of a Fire Flower, Cape Feather, or a Starman. Jumping on them will hurt Mario but spin jumping on them will not damage Mario or the spiny. They appear in Super Mario World as enemy thrown by Lakitus. Defeating a Spiny earns the player 100 points, slightly less than before. This variety can be defeated by a fireball, a shell, a Hammer, a hit from a tail from a Raccoon Suit and/or Tanooki Suit, and a Starman. counterparts: they will walk around until they fall off a cliff or are defeated.
