![]() And Haunted West isn't about snatching the historical spotlight away from good old White Anglo-Saxon Protestants to refocus it on just one or even two other participants in the Old West's real history either - practically everyone gets their shot, from Jewish and Irish settlers, through Chinese and Mexican Americans, as far down as the sole recorded Thai soldier to have fought in the American Civil War.Īs regards that historical richness, Haunted West does a phenomenal job of unearthing the actual records of the time, and recreating the Western experience. Was Bass Reeves really the inspiration for the Lone Ranger? Whether or not, his real-life exploits can certainly inspire a fantastic RPG narrative. Maybe this shouldn't come as any surprise seeing as how the true story of the Old West is largely the story of forgotten or suppressed voices - who were out there doing the pioneering, building, and adventuring often stolen from them in later. Chris Spivey's Foreword recounts his childhood enthusiasm for Westerns - even those whose arrant racism needed later, more critical scrutiny: "I loved the action, the grit, and the epic tales of a world beyond my grasp." And action, grit, and epic tales are what Haunted West serves up by the chuckwagon-full. Haunted West was conceived, according to its materials and accompanying blurbs, to amplify "the Voices of the Forgotten People of the Old West." As Chris Spivey writes at the book's opening, "the West and its mythology are drenched in prejudice regarding race, sexuality, gender, religion, ethnicity, and anything under the sun that makes humans different from one another." It's remarkable, then, how well the game succeeds in doing just that, while at the same time reeking with love and veneration for the Old West. Plus there's a slew of other material in the pipeline, and the final shape of the game may very likely be different once all the items are in. As well as Chris Spivey himself, it marshals (no pun intended) other contributing talent from the commanding heights of the RPG community, including "gang" members such as Chris Spivey, Dennis Detwiller, Gareth Hanrahan, Ken Hite, and Daniel Kwan. It's hard to think of an aspect of the Old West it doesn't cover (though there are one or two, and more on that later). One further justification and then I'll shut up - Haunted West is massive. So here are my interim findings from the initial core PDF - open to revision as further add-ons come moseyin' on down the trail. That's justification enough for getting an interim review out there. ![]() ![]() It's also partial - in the favour sense - because the game was created and led by Chris Spivey, already celebrated for his achievement with Harlem Unbound, and this project has been awaited with baited breath by gamers for many a moon now. It's partial because the full game was the beneficiary of an immensely successful Kickstarter, and a great many of the stretch goals are still in progress. We're looking forward to sharing more on this, but wanted to give you an early look at what we're building. An 'interlocutor' that adds to the voice assstant the ability to read various options to the player that they can select and operate.A 'describer' which consists of a voice assistant to tell the player what is around them. The co-pilot system can also employ a 'Blind Mode' which adds some more advanced accesibility features. There is even an option to enable a more complex A.I. Movement options will allow you to choose settings that help avoid collision, moving automatically or aligning to a selected target. The co-pilot accesibility options give you control over various parts of the game. Accesibility options are a really important element for us, we want to ensure that everyone is able to play and enjoy Haunted Space. The co-pilot is essentially the operating system of your ship and provides access to various game options, including the accesbility options. The game is still in development and some of these features will be refined so are subject to change, but we want to give you a sense of what we're working towards. Today we want to introduce you to the co-pilot system.
